What Is a Career Certificate Program?

A career certificate is a short-term, highly specialized credential that introduces or strengthens a skill relevant to a job or industry. They can be earned at any time: through a high school dual enrollment program, after graduating or as a working adult, including if you hold an associate or a bachelor’s degree.
These increasingly popular programs reduce many of the general education requirements integrated into full-length degrees and, instead, encourage skills-building through simulations and the field. Students have access to a direct route into a rising industry or can confidently adopt new tools and practices.
A year or less is the typical time commitment. From here, many students enter or move up in the workforce while continuing to learn — perhaps toward a degree or additional certificates. Opportunities continue to emerge in healthcare, information technology and the trades.
Please note that while a certificate program may help you qualify for job opportunities, completing coursework does not result in industry certification or licensure. You’ll follow your studies with an exam relevant to your field — like the Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) exam or the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence’s (ASE) series of exams — to fulfill these requirements.

Should I Do a Certificate or an Associate Degree?
There’s no right answer, but ask yourself these questions:

How Quickly Do I Want to Enter the Workforce?
While these two options often point to the same goal, you’ll take different routes there. Associate degrees generally require two years of full-time study, while many certificates can be completed within one year.
